On September 20th, we had the pleasure of joining together with a dynamic group of Women’s College Coalition (WCC) presidents to recognize four House Cardinals for their historic efforts to fortify women’s colleges. During a beautiful luncheon served in the Ernest S. Petinaud room of the Capitol, the WCC honored Representatives Rosa DeLauro, Barbara Lee, and Betty McCollum with the WCC Excellence in Women’s Leadership award. To Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard, we presented the WCC Lifetime Achievement Award for her devoted career advancing the lives of the underserved.
Our honorees all attended girls’ schools and women’s colleges. There, they harnessed the uniquely supportive environment that these schools provide. They never lost sight of the mission for which women’s colleges are known — empowering women to break free from antiquated gender norms. On the heels of the pandemic and with five of our members shuttering, merging, or going co-ed over the last three years, these leaders took swift action to mobilize the federal government to support women’s colleges. We thank them for their steadfast leadership and we honor them for their unwavering commitment to parity for women.
