This microcosm of “the global” village embodies the vision of Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian scholar who coined the phrase, “Yes, we humans all live in this evolving global village, sharing this beautiful planet with each other and all life forms.” We are exiting the 300-year old fossil-fueled Industrial Era, living in the Information Age and entering the Solar Age powered by free photons from our sun. This Age of Light is a new Age of Enlightenment with sustainable forms of human development based on better science and cleaner, greener technologies. This understanding of our human condition requires new eyes, new theories, new education and new leaders whose hearts and minds embrace whole systems awareness. You chose this kind of educational experience geared to our unfolding future of interdependence. As budding “planetary citizens,” you can help shape the new forms of governance, sustainable economies based on ecological literacy and founded on fairness and justice. As women, you have a special freedom to see obsolete structures, theories and the creativity to move beyond them.
