Gretchen Van Ness (Wilson College ‘80), Staff Attorney, U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit (Boston, Massachusetts)

"Because you came to Wilson, you have lived and breathed and grown in a place where women are leaders and followers, thinkers and talkers, doers and slackers. You have seen women succeed and you have seen them fail. You have learned that women can do everything, including make history. You have learned how to talk with, work with, live with and trust women who are different from you. You have learned how to fall down and get up again, and then extend your hand to the woman beside you so that the fall isn’t so hard next time. And so, because you are graduating from Wilson, you commence your life today with enormous advantages. You have been given a spectacular trust fund, an unlimited legacy that you can draw on for the rest of your life and that will be renewed every time you return here."
