As you face these changes head-on, I’m sure you have people you traditionally go to for advice. But when you think about where you want to go, who do you have as members of your “board of advisers”? A board of advisers is a collection of people you call upon to discuss major life decisions like your career and family. A board of advisers isn’t always the list of references for your resume. These are people who know you and who can offer life advice and support. I often refer to my board of advisers as my mentors, but I know it’s not 1993 and the job market has changed. I know that you can no longer wait for campus recruiters to bring job opportunities. Today there are individuals right here in Twichell who are members of my board. The most influential women in the world have a board of advisers. You have to prepare to be great. You do not need to do it alone. As of today, I want you to begin creating your board. This process should be deliberate; it will not happen overnight, but should be something you embrace, and include in your daily life. I recommend that you reach out to you advisers every three to six months. |
