THEATER COURSE WITH A SOCIAL PURPOSE
| Last year when Professor Denny Partridge, Barnard's Alice B. Pels Professor of Theatre, was awarded a Mellon New Directions Fellowship to create new theater coursework and touring opportunities, she found a way to combine her 30-year background in professional theater with social activism by developing "Theatre in the Community." |

Sylvia, Ethnic Studies Major, Mills College |
Integrating Academic Life with Social Action
Inspired by a Mills visiting professor who taught her how to integrate academic life and social action, Silvia’s direction in life has become clear—help others. After graduation, this ethnic studies major plans to live in an inner city neighborhood and work with marginalized citizens to bring about social change.
“After taking an ethnic studies course my first semester, I was encouraged to see that Mills had a field that not only taught but incorporated social action into my personal life. After I graduate, I want to be able to learn about and discover the needs of marginalized communities so I can utilize my social justice action and faith to help them.
One of the great things about Mills is the accessibility of professors. Unlike larger colleges and universities, Mills professors care enough to meet with you outside of class. Another reason I love Mills is because of the option of cross-registering. This allows me to learn what I specifically want to learn.
I feel like Mills is increasing my direction in life. It has really challenged me to take action, not just speak on my convictions.”

COMMENCEMENT THOUGHT:
| "Perhaps I can say, 'Follow your dream' in a way that's fresh. As in: don't let anyone discourage you. Don't back down when someone, often a parent or spouse worrying on your behalf, tells you that your dream is admirable, but too many people have that same dream. What I mean is: don't be afraid to take that leap, that job that challenges you, possibly even scares you, that sends you to a new city as a stranger in a strange land." |
