WOMEN'S COLLEGES VS. COEDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Especially noteworthy is that seniors at women’s colleges were more likely to engage in higher order thinking activities than seniors at coeducational institutions.

Similarly, both seniors and first-year students at women’s colleges scored higher on active and collaborative learning and student-faculty interaction than their counterparts at coeducational institutions.

Additionally, both first-year students and seniors at women’s colleges were more likely to engage in integrative activities that lead to deep learning.

Never Planned on it...

I wanted to come to the east coast for college. Hearing about a friend’s conversation with a Smith alum convinced me to look into the school. I went to an event sponsored by alumnae in the San Francisco area and decided to apply. Then I came for Discovery Weekend and could see myself here.

Though I’d never planned on going to a women’s college, I knew the statistics about how graduates of women’s colleges excel in underrepresented fields. With all the coed schools nearby, I knew there’d be balance. I also liked Northampton; it reminded me of Berkeley.

I’ve joined the Asian Students Association, the Intervarsity Christian Club, and I help with my house’s Diversity Board. The biggest step I’ve taken since coming here was running for class treasurer. I’ve never run for office but I wanted to push myself to try it. At Smith, if you tell people you want to try something new they support you.

Commencement Thought

"Our graduates have followed their hearts and their interests wherever they were led, and have not allowed themselves or anyone else to treat gender as barrier to success. They celebrated their feminine state and appreciated the role it played in all of the challenges that life brings.”
